History

Warren and Wetmore’s design was followed in the 1919 construction of the $4 million Ambassador Hotel. Built in 1921 as a second tower with 400 more rooms, it quickly exceeded its original 400 rooms. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his friend Harry Houdini got together at the hotel on June 18, 1922, in order to arrange a séance with the late mother of Doyle’s spiritual wife, Anna Houdini. According to Doyle, Houdini later disclosed that his mother did not speak English, despite the fact that Anna supposedly transcribed pages of notes she had written.

In 1931, unknown intruders shot and murdered Philadelphia mobster Mickey Duffy while he slept at the hotel.

Controversy

When the Tropicana (then known as TropWorld), the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority, and the city attempted to use eminent domain to acquire Joseph Milano’s land at 1 South Brighton Avenue for a surface parking lot in 1995, it created a significant dispute regarding the resort’s growth. Milano v. Edmar of New Jersey d/b/a TropWorld Casino and Entertainment Resort, Casino Reinvestment Development Authority, City of Atlantic City, et al. is the lawsuit that Milano and his family brought in the New Jersey Appeals Court to prevent the application of eminent domain. In agreement with the Milano family, a New Jersey appeals court imposed a restraining order that stopped TropWorld and the CRDA from moving further. Joseph Milano and his family members continued to live there as of 2014.
